Have you ever cooked a nice meal for someone you care about? I don’t mean throwing a steak on the grill … I’m talking about finding a special recipe that takes a good couple hours to prepare, knowing that it will put a smile on your dinner companion’s face. Have you ever bought someone a gift for no reason other than to show how much you care?
I’ve done both of these things, and it makes me feel great to bring a little light into someone’s day … to treat a dear friend with kindness and compassion.
But some people spend so much time an energy doing nice things for other people that they forget to do nice things for themselves. What’s that, you ask? “Why would I spend hours making dinner only for myself or buy myself a gift? That seems a little self-indulgent.” Well, that’s exactly my point. Indulge yourself!
Most of the massage I provide is therapeutic in nature, so my clients most often come to me seeking relief from some sort of physical condition. But it’s not unusual for even my most frequent clients to walk in my door and tell me, “I just want a relaxing massage today; we can return to our more scripted, therapeutic treatment during our next visit.” I love to see that self- indulgence – and I quickly adjust to give them a more “spa-like” massage.
But you don’t have to wait for your next massage appointment to be kind to yourself. So go ahead – prepare that grand meal, drop a few dollars on something that makes you smile. After all, you’re the most precious person in your life!
