How many times have you ignored your instinct … and then been sorry for it?
Maybe it was the cobb salad you wish you had ordered instead of the pizza. Or the quiet night at home reading a book that you wish you had chosen over a loud night out with friends.
For decisions large and small, instinct must win out. After all, why would we want to waste this precious gift we’ve been given?
Of course I’m talking about more than menu choices or how to spend an evening. When we follow our instincts – call it intuition or sixth sense – only good can come of it, because in a very real sense we are also following our hearts. So imagine, too, the phone call to a loved one that you regrettably put off because you figured they were too busy to chat … when talking with him or her actually would have made you both feel energized. Or imagine the visit that you think an aging relative needs. Sure, they might say they don’t need help with a household chore, but in the end they’ll be glad for the help – and the company.
You see, there is no room in our hearts for second thoughts. Thinking, after all, is the domain of the mind. And instinct, as I’ve said, lives in the heart. On any given day, in any given situation, we know what to do and what to say, but we often “think ourselves out of it” from fear of change or fear of pain or fear of loss.
Why would we do that, when following our instinct so often leads to pleasure and happiness?
