I hate limits.
Okay, so maybe “hate” is a strong word here. But please don’t tell me that chocolate dessert is not good for me … that adults can’t watch Saturday morning cartoons … that I have to wear chinos to go see a show at the Hanover Theater … or that I can’t create my own livelihood with only myself to rely on.
We should all strive to follow our own paths, our own truths, our own inner bliss, as the quote above says. If I deny myself dessert, cartoons, and shaping my own business, I am also forgetting to honor the small things in life that give me pleasure. And believe me, these really are small things in the grander scheme of the universe.
Maybe a friend will “tsk tsk” me because I’ve “wasted” a weekend morning in my PJs with just coffee and Bugs Bunny to keep me company. Maybe some upper-crust theatergoer will turn up his nose at me because I’m not dressed to the nines. Or maybe a skeptic will tell me that the vast majority of small businesses don’t last five years. Their reactions don’t matter to me – in fact, they don’t matter to anyone but themselves.
Ben Franklin, despite his own lapses from social etiquette and forays into hedonism, said “Early to bed, early rise, keeps a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” If he imposed these limits on himself, I’m sure he never could have been happy. Thank you for the wisdom, Mr. Franklin, but I will lay my head on my pillow when I am tired. And I will arise when I am awake. And I will do things that make me feel good. Because when all is said and done, this is my path that I am following. It is unique and it is rare and it is mine. And from this path that only I tread, my joy radiates to the world every day.
Follow your passions. Truth will follow.
